From Gallery 360
“Harper is known for his porcelainesque portraits of atypical beauties that languish in ethereal backdrops. He has concentrated on elaborate environments for his portraits to lurk that reveal to the viewer a more intimate dialog between subject and setting.  In one piece, a dangling spider hanging from the leaf of a delicate rose petal marries with the strewn letter of Beethoven’s immortal beloved, while in another work entitled “Bella Donna” a porn star is almost deified by Harper’s portrayal.  His masterful oil painting style, which he describes best as “magical realism” involves supernatural human features, exaggerated body proportions, and fleeting elements of fantastical surrounds. These provocative works are sure to hearken audiences with the magic and passion surrounding Harper’s chosen, Le Femme Noir.”

From City Pages (100 Creatives) by Jessica Armbruster

Picking out a piece by painter Nicholas Harper in a lineup should always be an easy task. His spin on classical portraiture is eye-catching, to say the least. His subject's long limbs, slim figures, and often-elongated necks are unmistakable. While they are typically depicted as seated or standing in front of a dark, gothic background, there is an ethereal, supernatural glow to each individual. And while pieces may seem bizarre upon first glance, it is undeniable that there is something compellingly human about them. In addition to his paintings, Harper owns and runs the Rogue Buddha Gallery, a space located in Northeast Minneapolis that has received national attention from The New York Times, CNN and GQ Magazine.

DRAWING OF THE DAY

MEMORY LANE, MEMORY VAULT & DRAWING OF THE DAY

03/01/11 - Today's proving to be a busy day. For the new article, Memory Lane, I thought I would share some of the history of the Rogue Buddha Gallery. Whether you're a regular here or a newcomer, I think you'll find out some new tid bits you haven't known about. While writing the article I realized it's a bit long so I'm breaking it into parts. You can read part 1 now and part 2 will come out next week. Hope you enjoy!

Writing this weeks article got me thinking, (strange I know) what if people could share their memories of the RBG for everyone to see? And so, now you can via the RBG Memory Vault.

Lastly, starting today I'll be making one new drawing per day for the next month. There will be a link on the right of this page as well as on my portfolio page where I will post one picture per day. Each drawing will be either graphite or pen and ink. They'll all be small and reasonably priced (anywhere from $35 - $200, but mostly under $100). The first image will be online on March 2nd.

FEBRUARY 2011

HAUNTED BY GRAGE

02/24/11 - Before the Rogue Buddha moved to its current location, artist Brian Mark called 357 13th Ave home. Brian generously offered the location to the buddha when he and his wife decided to move to Costa Rica where they set up shop for a number of years before finally settling in Maine. In October of 2008, Brian returned to 13th Ave for a solo exhibit of his acid on stainless steel work. The video below offers a brief slide show of his work and the opening, hope you enjoy. Brian's artist page is now updated with a new CV, statement along with work available for purchase. I will let you know as more of the artist pages are updated. Cheers!

ROGUE BUDDHA ARTISTS GO NORTH

02/17/11 - Call it chance, call it serendipity, call it luck.  Three of the Rogue Buddha Gallery’s mainstay artists have made, and are making, their way to the Atwood Gallery in the heart of the St. Cloud University campus.  Michael Thomsen, whose work is currently on display, followed an exhibit by Kyle Fokken.  Following Thomsen will be a relative newcomer to the Buddha, Caitlin Karolczak.  While Caitlin made her first appearance at the Buddha last spring during Art-A-Whirl, she has had a consistent home at the gallery since.  Personally, this trifecta of exhibits represents some of my favorite artwork being made and is a great representation of the work we love to showcase at the RBG.

Arts & Cultural Heritage Producer for KVCS (88.1FM) Jeff Carmack recently featured this synchronistic happening on air as a news feature.  You can listen to the pod cast below or click this link for the KVCS pod cast page.

HAPPY VALENTINES DAY

02/14/11 - In honor of V-Day, just wanted to shoot some love out to all of the Gut of Art & Rogue Buddha Gallery followers. Your support of the gallery, the artists and performers we love and this website is greatly appreciated! I'm currently working on a new article so with any luck there should be something online by then end of the week. We're also putting together our next few exhibits at the gallery so keep an eye out for the details in the next week or so.

Cheers!

INTRODUCING THE NEW GUT OF ART

02/07/11 - I'm happy to announce that the new Gut of Art website is now online. The new site is a combination of the Rogue Buddha Gallery site & Nicholas Harper site. Please take some time to check it all out! Cheers!

NEW ARTICLE, ICON

02/06/11 - It's been some time since I wrote an article for the old Gut of Art site. 2010 proved to be quite hectic and I didn't get as much writing done as I had hoped to. Now that the new site is completed, I will be once again adding new content in the form of articles and updates on a more regular basis. The past year has provided me with quite a bit to be opinionated about and I can't wait to share it with you. I'm also excited to share articles from new guest writers. 2011 is gonna rule! This first article is basically about my portraiture. I've written this in lieu of posting an artist statement. This is really just an introduction. I'll discuss the art more in depth in future articles. Cheers!
