My work references artifacts and mythologies from diverse cultures. Tombs, shrines, icons, and reliquaries are all inspiration for my artwork. I hand build and extrude clay, making funerary and ritualistic pieces where I explore ideas in ornamentation, spirituality, sexual idenity, and mortality. The use of red earthenware with stains and underglazes helps me create the palette and texture of ancient remains. Other surface treatments like flocking, gilding, and painting help refer to more contemporary mementos. Junk stores provide me with found objects that I often use to make clay molds. I then reform and alter the images giving them new meaning and purpose. In this way, these unwanted and broken items receive an afterlife of their very own.
